Association of Friends of the Marc Chagall National Museum
HISTORY AND VOCATION OF THE ASSOCIATION OF FRIENDS OF THE MUSEUM
In 1973, the Musée National Message Biblique Marc Chagall was inaugurated in Nice, at the bottom of the Cimiez hill. At the instigation of André Malraux, then Minister of Cultural Affairs, the museum was specially created to receive the donation from Marc and Valentina Chagall. Nearly six months before its opening, the donors expressed their wish that the museum should be associated with an organisation that would actively participate in its animation and influence.
The Association of the Friends of the Marc Chagall National Biblical Message Museum was therefore created with the personal support of the painter, who marked its birth by drawing for it an unfurled angel that became its symbol.
The aims of the association are since that date clearly defined by article 1 of its statutes which stipulates that it shall :
"To help animate and promote the Biblical Message, in France and abroad, by collaborating in the organisation of cultural events, in the development of the library, in the enrichment of the collections, in the improvement of the facilities".
The association is supported by a Board of Directors and by Marc Chagall's heirs - two of whom are active directors - who are always very attentive to its success and continuity.
