In fall 2025, the Marc Chagall National Museum will present its rich collection through a chronological and thematic exhibition that illustrates the permanence and recurrence of the themes explored by the artist since his early years.

On the one hand, self-portraits, alone or in pairs, occupy a prominent place in Chagall's work. The artist depicts himself as a painter with a palette, in front of his easel or in his studio. To illustrate his happiness after his marriage to his wife Bella in 1915, the painter produced a large number of double portraits dominated by passion. These portraits of couples embody a true evocation of the universal dimension of love.

The exhibition also focuses on the themes of the circus and dance, which are partly inspired by the Hasidic Jewish celebrations the artist experienced in his childhood. Chagall depicts the acrobat as an allegory of the artist and the circus as a satirical metaphor for society, where fantasy and cruelty coexist.

Finally, the Bible occupies a prominent place in Chagall's work. For more than fifty years, Chagall continued his work of depicting biblical episodes in a poetic and spiritual dimension, inspired by his desire to compose an allegorical message of universal peace. This fall's exhibition also aims to present, one last time before their departure in 2026 for a major exhibition in Seoul, the monumental paintings from the collection.
