deissin de Fernand Léger pour le génériqueL'Inhumaine de Marcel L'Herbier

The film tells the story of Einar Norsen, a scientist madly in love with Claire Lescot, a ruthless singer who breaks the hearts of all her suitors and ends up poisoned by one of them. Terrified at the thought of living without her, Einar transports Claire to his laboratory to bring her back to life using a machine of his own invention.

Pioneer of the artistic avant-garde and experimental cinema, Fernand Léger designed one of the film's sets and wrote a drawing for the credits.

Eager to achieve a true synthesis of the arts, L'Herbier teamed up with the greatest creators of his time: major figures of Art Deco such as the architect Robert Mallet-Stevens and the furniture designer Pierre Chareau, the musician Darius Milhaud, the fashion designer Paul Poiret... L'Inhumaine was thus seen as a manifesto of this resolutely modern aesthetic and its innovative dimension was sometimes acclaimed, sometimes criticised.

This event is organised by the National Museums of the 20th Century in the Alpes-Maritimes, in partnership with La Bande Passante, a collective exhibition, training and production space dedicated to still and moving images and sound, and the Beaulieu cinema.

Launched in 2022 to coincide with the Fernand Léger and the Cinema exhibition, the aim of this collaboration is to echo the exhibitions presented in the museum and the artists celebrated, as in the case of the film L'Inhumaine, whose sets were designed by Fernand Léger and plunges the artist into the adventure of cinema. This ambitious project paved the way for new encounters
and film collaborations.
