"La Partie de campagne" de Fernand Léger

A guest work
from June 28th to October 6th 2014
Musée national Fernand Léger

La Partie de campagne is the title given by Fernand Léger to a series produced at the end of his life. The paintings and graphic studies in this series deal with leisure and paid holidays, which the historic law passed under the Front Populaire established as a major social event. Turning the page on the dark hours of the war, a joyful atmosphere characterises these works and invites us to enjoy the simple joys of resting in nature.

In dialogue with the final version (1954) lent by the Maeght Foundation on the occasion of its 50th anniversary, the exhibition presents a group of paintings and studies belonging to the museum. It thus allows us to understand the stages of Léger's work, as he "put together" his composition with variations in order to translate, beyond the anecdotal, his dream of an art for all in the service of a fraternal humanity.
