11. Cinema in the city
In anticipation of the 1937 International Exhibition of Arts and Techniques in Paris, Léger proposed, as early as 1935, to convert the walls of Paris into a gigantic cinema screen. "Cinematographic projections" on the Eiffel Tower but also "in the sky, on the gables of buildings" would flood the city with lights and "bright and mobile colours".
In the 1930s, Léger drew on his experience of the cinema to free his painting from the frame of the canvas and spread it into the public space. During his third trip to the United States in 1938-1939, he produced a set of preparatory studies for an ambitious decorative project, Cinematic Mural, in collaboration with the architect Wallace Harrison, for the lobby of the Radio-City Tower at Rockefeller Center. This gouache drawing of New York was probably part of this daring programme, which included projections of moving pictures in the urban space of the American city. To the painter's great displeasure, this utopia of cinema in the city ended in failure, following the refusal of the Rockefeller Center Art Committee. - Versione italiana

In previsione dell'Esposizione Internazionale delle Arti e delle Tecniche di Parigi del 1937, Léger propose, già nel 1935, di trasformare i muri di Parigi in un gigantesco schermo cinematografico. "Proiezioni cinematografiche" sulla Torre Eiffel ma anche "nel cielo, sui frontoni degli edifici" avrebbero inondato la città di luci e "colori vivaci e mobili".
Negli anni Trenta, Léger attinge alla sua esperienza cinematografica per liberare la sua pittura dalla cornice del quadro e diffonderla nello spazio pubblico. Durante il suo terzo viaggio negli Stati Uniti, nel 1938-1939, realizza una serie di studi preparatori per un ambizioso progetto decorativo, Cinematic Mural, in collaborazione con l'architetto Wallace Harrison, per l'atrio della Radio-City Tower al Rockefeller Center.
