Theme and Variations "Initiation" for string quartet
This theme and variation presents a series of miniatures in which four combinatorial notes sow a fervent prayer, a collective initiation revealed within a permanent dialectic between elevation towards the spirit and descent into the abyss of matter as intoxicating as it is inspiring. For me, "Initiation" evokes this awareness of learning about fullness and emptiness, light and shadow, in the midst of a multitude of ideas as whimsical as they are real.

I wanted to delve deeper into the lyrical links where string instruments are free to vibrate to the sound of a string, a challenging melody. The dissonances are only there to reinforce the feeling of friction between the testing collective initiation of a world as crazy as it is complex, and the link with a more interior initiation. Composing this work is an initiation for me, as it's the first time I've composed for this group. I dedicate this work to collective initiation.
Jonathan Benichou, composer
