The disquieting strangeness of artificial intelligence

in partnership with the project ProPhilia and the Université Côte d'Azur, the Musée national Marc Chagall is joining forces with the first edition of the Festival of Philosophical Diffusion, organized from March 30 to April 17, 2024.

"The year 2023 was marked by the emergence of several AI applications, capable of generating text and images, and which raise the question of the proper of the human. Can we be dispossessed of our expressive abilities, which would be taken over by an application based on a few key words? Can we imagine AI keeping our diaries for us? Or that it eliminates journalists and illustrators, covering up reality with a veil of false information? Philosophy, in my view, cannot predict the future, but its task is to interrogate the possible through fiction, and to show the weirdness, the disquieting strangeness of the forms of life likely to come into being."

Pierre Cassou-Noguès is a writer and philosopher, professor at the University of Paris 8 - Vincennes - Saint-Denis. His work focuses on the relationship between the imaginary and the forms of rationality we put in place. In La Bienveillance des machines (Seuil, 2022), he looks at the role of fictions in new technologies, which gives their unconscious reach and power far beyond their actual realizations. His latest book, entitled L'Oncle. Un impossible roman, is an investigation into the elusive figure of a Soviet spy whose intimate life seems to elude all accounts of it.
