Editorial by the Director of the National 20th Century Museums of the Alpes-Maritimes

" Dear visitors,

The worldwide epidemic is forcing our museums, like all human activities, to rethink and reinvent themselves in order to continue to live in this complex context. During the three months of confinement, we have been working on the preparation of special arrangements to introduce preventive measures - lowered gauges, physical distancing, wearing of masks - all new measures that allow us to protect each other. It is with great joy that our teams at the National Museums of the 20th century in the Alpes-Maritimes reopened on 22 June. Thanks to the mobilisation of the Ministry of Culture's agents, our sites are now fully capable of recreating the conditions for the encounter between the work of art and its public, in safe sanitary conditions.

The mobilisation and solidarity in the art world have been strong: our projects have had to be slightly postponed but they have been maintained. The year 2020 is therefore coming to an end in the National Museums of the 20th Century in the Alpes-Maritimes with three outstanding exhibitions: the exhibition of Mounira Al Solh in Vallauris as part of the Manifesta biennial, that of Gilbert & George, Images of Utopia, in Biot and the opening of the exhibition De couleur et d'encre. Marc Chagall and the art magazines. At the Fernand Léger National Museum, from 12 December, Le Transport des Forces will be presented, a monumental work (5 m high and almost 9 m long) and emblematic of the artist. It will be exhibited during the five years of its deposit at the museum by the Fond National d'Art Contemporain.

With the cultural programme that resumes this autumn, contemporary creation is once again given the prominent place that we wish to give it. Thanks to the involvement of our partners - the Ballets de Monte-Carlo, the Opéra de Nice, the Cirm and the Conservatoire régional, Piste d'Azur, the Biot media library, the Université Côte d'Azur - dance, music, circus, reading and university research will be present throughout the year in our museums.

The year 2021 will be placed under the sign of light. It will open with the exhibition devoted to Marc Chagall's stained glass, Marc Chagall, le passeur de lumière (designed in partnership with the Centre Pompidou Metz) which will take place in the summer and will be followed by a carte blanche entrusted to the artist Cécile Bart. The latter works in different media on the question of colour, transparency and light. At the Fernand Léger National Museum in Biot, a major exhibition entitled Fernand Léger and the Cinema will take stock of this question for the first time and will allow visitors to discover the many aspects of Fernand Léger's passion for the 7th art. At the Pablo Picasso National Museum, War and Peace, after renovation work on the facades, the artist Violaine Lochu will take over the chapel through sound, delivering a collective work around the notion of war.
To our public, our faithful, our first-time visitors, we want to offer a bright season ! "
