John Armleder

from June 28th to September 30th 2014
Musée national Fernand Léger

Opening on Saturday 28 June at 11am

Although active since the end of the 1960s, notably within the Geneva-based group Écart, John Armleder's work gained full recognition in the 1980s. His "furnishings" or "Furniture-sculpture", as the artist calls his arrangements of "reworked" furniture objects, quickly gained him recognition on the international art scene. Very strongly influenced by the proposals of Fluxus and, more particularly, by those of George Brecht, Armleder's work never ceases to question art in its relationship to reality. The objects that the artist combines with his paintings, the elementary forms - circles, bands, dots... - with which he adorns the surfaces, the drips that arbitrarily cover the latter as well as the other processes employed are the constituents of a work that the artist has chosen to establish on the interstitial zones between art and decoration, between the object and the subject and more globally between art and life. The exhibition that John Armleder has conceived for the Fernand Léger National Museum pursues this questioning which, since the emergence of the artistic avant-gardes, constitutes the very reality of art.
