Marc Chagall, In the Light of Matter

New display of the collections
from January 29 to April 25 2022
Musée national Marc Chagall

Marc Chagall (1887-1985) is best known for his paintings. In the new display of the collections, seventeen paintings by the master are shown, marking the major stages of his artistic career in Russia, Paris and the Côte d'Azur: The Holy Family (1909), The Studio (1910), Self-portrait in Green (1914), The Dance (1950-1952), The Blue Circus (1950-1952) and the emblematic triptych Resistance, Resurrection, Liberation (1937-1952).

Marc Chagall was also a multidisciplinary artist who was interested throughout his life in many techniques in the elaboration of his paintings (pencil, pastel and Indian ink drawings). He has multiplied collaborations to experiment and see his ideas come to fruition in singular techniques and materials. Lithography, copper engraving, ceramics, sculpture and also tapestry are featured in this tour of the collections, where the public can discover works that are rarely shown, such as the series of preparatory drawings for some of the great paintings in the Biblical Message cycle (The Creation of Man, Moses before the Burning Bush, The Song of Songs, etc.).

Also on display is part of the series of copper plates (1931-1934), drypoint and etching matrices for the engravings in the Illustrated Bible commissioned in 1930 by the publisher Ambroise Vollard and published in 1956.

Beyond painting, this exhibition reveals an artist eager to explore the material, to find its light to make it his messenger.
